“Un calcio al razzismo", a three-day event in Calabria on hospitality |
Sport against racism. Opened yesterday and running until 5 August in Caulonia, a district in Locride in the province of Reggio Calabria, is "Un calcio al razzismo" (Giving racism a kick), a project organised by the Connecting People consortium, active in Italy for years in hospitality and integration for immigrants through SPRAR (Protection System for asylum seekers and refugees), CIE (Identification and deportation Centre) and Cara (Asylum Seekers Hospitality Centre).
Competing for the football tournament title are a number of teams from all over Calabria and Sicily, plus the home team. Sport thus provides the chance for discussion about the problems of immigration in the south of Italy. In fact, the last day features a debate entitled "The south, land of hospitality: the challenge of immigration" with contributions from Lucio Musolino, prefect of Reggio Calabria, Daniela Di Capua, director of SPRAR and Giuseppe Fiorini Morosini, the bishop of the diocese of Locri-Gerace, among others. That evening, meetings continue with a round table discussion on "the migrant and hospitality in the south” (involving presidents of the Regional Authorities of Calabria and Sicily, Agazio Loiero and Raffaele Lombardo, as well as the Vice president of the Parliamentary Security Commission, Luigi De Sena) and the premier of a short film by Vincenzo Caricari.
